Dorotha Matheny Kerr, Elsie Gardner Matheny, and Jettie Short Gardner in 1950

In 1950, doctors made house calls, I became a teenager, we went to lots of shows (theaters were air conditioned and homes were not), listened to radio broadcasts, spent the Fourth of July in Osceola (as usual), got our first television set (black and white, of course), and my patriarch, Grandpa Williams Gardner, died after their farm sale.  A picture taken at the farm sale is included near the end of the year.  It looked bleak and cold.

I remember asking Grandpa once if his nickname was “Bills.”  He said “No.”
